Here we have yet another example of the problem with bible literalism.  In this clip, a simple question is asked and the priest not only cannot answer it, but it is obvious that he has never even thought about it.  I am not picking on this man personally.  I am picking on his church, a church that preaches hatred of gays and lesbians and that spends millions of dollars on political campiag...

Subjugating to the Will of God... an email about the redefinition of marriage from a Holy Covenant.

This morning, I received the following email:

I take issue with your idea to redefine marriage as anything but a holy covenant between one natural man with one natural woman as a religious sacrament bound together by God. Marriage has never before been defined as anything else.

To redefine marriage now would be like making a new definition for ...

Recently, a gay Jewish man sent me a note.  Accompanying the note was a link to a lengthy document written by a Conserative Rabbi. In the document the Rabbi explores Judaism’s teachings about homosexuality.

Below is my reply to the note.  While this reply clearly is written as one gay Jewish man to another, I believe that it speaks to all of us who ar...

There is a discussion in the Talmud (Kiddushin 29a - 30b) of what a parent should teach a child.  The Rabbis conclude a child must be taught three things: Torah, a trade, and to swim.  Furthermore, if a parent cannot teach these things, the parent is obligated to hire someone to teach them to the child.

To teach Torah is the obligation to provide the...

I did not make the air Ibreathe

Nor the sun that warms me...

We are put on this earth for a very short time.  As we are placed on this earth, we are given a soul.  In effect, we are put here with a mission to accomplish.  Why are we here?  What is our mission?  What is it God wants from us?  What is the purpose of or meaning of life?

To answer these questions, I am going to t...

The first five books of the Hebrew Bible are known as the Torah.  The Torah is read in temple on an annual cycle consisting of weekly Torah readings.  Each weekly torah reading is given a name.

The weekly Torah reading we are concerned with is Metzorah.  In the Torah reading that immediately preceeds it ,Tazriah, we are told of a biblical disease k...

Who is the man who desires life, who loves days to see goodness?

Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceitfully.

Shun evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.
